Abstract

The Role of Muhammadiyah in the Development of Islam in the Archipelago, Particularly During the Early Period of Its Arrival. Muhammadiyah emerged as a modern organization in the early 20th century, significantly contributing to social and educational transformation in Indonesia. Through its inclusive approach, Muhammadiyah successfully disseminated Islamic teachings peacefully, embraced diverse societal groups, and established educational and social service institutions, such as schools and hospitals. Furthermore, the organization introduced a moderate and rational concept of Islam, positioning itself as a reform agent relevant to the times. This study aims to explore the role of Muhammadiyah during the early stages of Islam in the archipelago. The research employs a qualitative method with a descriptive approach to examine Muhammadiyah’s contributions in this period. The findings reveal that Muhammadiyah’s role extended beyond religious preaching, as it also improved societal welfare, making it a key force in the development of Islam in the archipelago.
